Elsa Day

Maiem, (Hello), my name is Elsa Day from Mer (Murray) Island situated on the eastern coast of the Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait) on the Great Barrier Reef.

Introduction

I am a tribal elder of the Komet tribe, known for its longstanding seafaring tradition and representing one of the eight tribes of Mer (Murray) Island.

Background and Education

I am a retired Language and Culture Community Teacher and am presently undertaking studies in the Master of Indigenous Language Education (MILE) program at the University of Sydney.

Cultural Heritage

My lineage is deeply rooted in seafaring; both my grandparents and parents were seafarers. While the sea is recognised as a navigational route, for our community it is primarily a source of sustenance, as the reefs provide us with essential marine resources, particularly seafood.

Commitment to Preservation

I am profoundly dedicated to contributing to initiatives that ensure the preservation and sustainable management of our marine environment.
