Yessie Mosby
Traditional Owner and Climate Advocate
Yessie Mosby, a Kulkalgal man from Masig Island, is a traditional owner and skilled craftsman known for his traditional headdresses (dhari). He is one of the eight Torres Strait Islanders, known as the "Torres Strait 8," who filed a landmark complaint with the United Nations Human Rights Committee in 2019, alleging that the Australian Government's insufficient action on climate change violated their human rights.
Role in the Torres Strait: Yessie has been a vocal advocate for his community, highlighting the tangible impacts of climate change on the Torres Strait Islands, including rising sea levels and coastal erosion, which threaten their homes, culture, and way of life.
